Welding inspections for new installations and alterations to existing installations of steel elements in buildings and structures in accordance with AWS D1.1 are required by BC 1704.3.1. Inspections must be performed by a qualified welding inspector. As excepted by BC 1704.3, the special welding inspector need not be continuously present during welding of certain items, provided the materials, welding procedures and qualifications of welders are verified prior to the start of the work. Periodic inspections of the work are required, as is a visual inspection of all welds prior to completion. AMAA can perform welding inspections via a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) who has been certified through the American Welding Society (AWS).
